WHAT IS FUSION DANCE?

Fusion dance can be difficult to define, and depending on who you ask, you may get dramatically different answers. As for us here at Menagerie, we define Fusion as a sort of meta-dance: The rules being followed can change from song to song or even within the same song, according to the moment-by-moment inspiration of those doing the dancing.

Fusion can be a combination of established styles, such as Blues, Swing, Zouk, and/or Tango. It can include less conventional movement arts, like Contact Improv and Ecstatic. Or it can involve dancers moving purely based on understanding of body mechanics and dance theory, creating something on the spot without deliberately drawing from a pre-existing style.

Fusion is usually performed in a duo partnership, but solo dancing and 3+ person partnerships can also happen. We highly encourage everyone learn both the lead and follow roles, and dancers comfortable with both will often switch roles from song to song, or again, even within the same song.

At its heart, Fusion emphasizes creativity and experimentation. Come explore your ideas with us!
